Is Vegetarian Dog Food Good for Your Dog?
A big question among vegetarian dog owners addresses whether a vegetarian diet is appropriate dogs. There is some commercial vegetarian dog food available that supply plant proteins instead of animal proteins. The problem is that humans are natural omnivores. Dogs are not. Most veterinarians in fact believe that animal protein is more befitting to canines since it’s what’s consumed in the wild. They also believe this because dogs are natural carnivores. (Just take a look at a dog’s teeth – they’re natural meat rippers!)
In addition to a dog’s natural disposition, its stomach cannot digest some plant proteins. This alone is enough to cause serious concern if you’re thinking about placing your dog on a vegetarian dog food diet. Just like with a holistic dog food diet, we also recommend that you consult your vet before going vegetarian. The health of some dogs will actually improve with a vegetarian dog food diet, but yours may not. Only your vet will know for sure.
