The Dog Stay Command and How to Teach It
The dog stay command is a lifesaver. Literally. There will be times when a leash just isn’t appropriate for a dog, but the ability to control the dog is. Here’s how to teach your dog to stay, whether you’re out in public, in the backyard, or inside the home.
1. Start with the sit command. If necessary, train the dog to sit first. Teaching the dog sit command is an essential part of teaching the dog stay command. Read our article about the dog sit command for instructions.
2. Use a leash. The idea behind the dog stay command is to control the dog off leash. In the training phase, the leash is necessary in the event that the dog would rather chase after something.
3. Give the stop sign. Stand half a foot in front of the dog and extend your hand forward in a traffic controller’s "stop" fashion. Give the "stay" command and wait a few seconds. Then walk toward the dog and reward it with a treat.
4. Stay in Intervals. Repeat step 3 in longer intervals. Start of with 3 seconds and then increase it to 6. Then 12. Then 24. If the dog starts to walk toward you, put him back in place and repeat the "stay" command. Wait, and then walk away from the dog.
5. Be consistent. Don’t be fooled by a dog’s grasp of the stay command. This "trick" can be mastered in half an hour or less. Only daily practice will teach the dog that this is a command applicable everyday – not just during fun afternoons.
6. Drop the leash. If the dog faithfully follows the stay command while leashed, try it without a leash – either inside the home or within a safe barrier such as a fenced yard.
