The Dog Down Command and How to Teach It

  • Training
  • command
  • down

The dog down command comes in handy when you’re dealing with an anxious dog that refuses to relax when you’re trying to watch TV or have a conversation with company. And just like with the stay command, the sit command helps the dog learn the down command rather quickly. Here’s how:

1. Start with the sit command. If necessary, train the dog to sit first. Teaching the dog sit command is an essential part of teaching the dog stay command. Read our article about the sit command for instructions.

2. Hold a treat in front of the dog’s nose and lower it to the floor while you issue the dog "down" command.

3. Once the dog lowers its head to get the treat, pull the treat toward you but don’t raise it. Keeping the treat at ground level will emphasize the "down" position.

4. Sometimes the dog will rise up on its legs and walk to get the treat. If you notice your dog starting to rise, place your free hand on the dog’s rump.

5. If necessary, pull the dog’s forelegs toward you so that they’re extended and force the dog to lie.

6. Only when the dog is in the proper position should you give it a treat.

7. Refrain from immediately treating the dog if you want it to stay in the down position for a specific duration. As long as the dog knows there a treat to be had, it will stay down.
