About the Teacup Poodle
Teacup Poodles are Toy Poodles
Teacup poodles in general fall between 2 – 4 pounds. But unlike with the standard, miniature, or toy poodle, there isn’t a definitive weight or height limit that separates the tiny poodle from the toy poodle. Miniature poodles for example, are distinctively unlike standard poodles because the height limit between the two is 15 inches. Similarly, the height limit between toy poodles and miniature poodles is 10 inches. The same goes for tiny poodles or tiny toy poodles as well. All poodles weighing under 10 pounds and standing below 10 inches are toy poodles no matter how small they are. That’s why the AKC registers teacup poodles as toy poodles instead of creating a new category for these smaller dogs.
Relevant Issues
In our article about, tiny toy Poodles, we already addressed some of the concerns surrounding such small dogs. If you can imagine, a two-pound dog just doesn’t have much of a defense system internally or externally. They’re thus more vulnerable to any number of dangers that a more robust dog could handle. That’s why we recommend that you think long and hard before buying or adopting a teacup poodle.
All is not lost with a teacup poodle however. Teacup poodles have their advantages as well.
Advantages of Owning a Teacup Poodle
To be fair, we can say that a teacup poodle is perfect for those who don’t want to or can’t expend the room, size, or expenses of a larger poodle. These tiny variations will get plenty of exercise running about in a house or apartment, and since they’re included within the AKC’s toy poodle category, they can compete in AKC competitions and perform with as much skill as a standard, miniature or toy.
Other advantages include their small expenses. It doesn’t take much to feed a dog of this size (probably less than ½ a cup of food every day), and they don’t require a lot of leg room. They can easily travel around outside of a cage and basic grooming isn’t as lengthy or expensive as that of a miniature or standard poodle. An *intricate* clip however, such as an English saddle or continental cut, could rise your grooming costs a little only because these styles are so fancy. Implementing one of these clips on such a tiny animal could require a bit more diligence and care.
